William Shakespeare was born in April of 1564 to John and Mary Arden Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. He married at the age of eighteen and became a father soon thereafter. His wife, Anne Hathaway, was apparently with child before the ceremony took place. She was eight years older than he. Interestingly, as a sign of that culture, William needed his father’s signature on a marriage bond. Likely, the bond was issued and the marriage was pushed through because of Anne’s pregnancy. William and Anne had three children – a daughter, Susanna, and twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet, the only son, died at the age of eleven.
He began his writings at around the age of twenty-six, writing thirty-seven plays and numerous other works. It seems that during his life, he won favor with Queen Elizabeth and was part of the best theatre group around at that time, known as the Lord Chamberlain’s Company of Players. He was instrumental in all aspects of the success of the company, working as a full-time professional, according to Biography.com.
Speculation about the relationship between Anne and William suggest that perhaps the two were not very compatible, as William lived away from his family for periods of time. During this era, it was unheard of for a couple to divorce.
An interesting fact about Shakespeare is that both his father and his mother were illiterate. After a series of misfortunes, William’s family became laden with financial difficulties, resulting in William leaving school at around the age of thirteen. Eventually, the family’s status began to rise again.

William Shakespeare died at the age of fifty-two, leaving a substantial sum to his first-born daughter, Susanna, and her heirs.
Shakespeare’s writings are timeless in that the stories are as applicable today as they were in the long ago. His plays were filled with real-life drama, with characters filled with human emotion ranging from jealousy, anger, greed, cowardice, and more. He is considered by a large number of people to be the greatest writer of all time. According to biography.com, “no writer’s living reputation can compare to that of Shakespeare”.
